Prior to this, he was the Deputy Director General (Occupational Safety) DOSH from 16 February 2015 to 08 April 2018, Director of DOSH Johor from 2008 – 2015, Director of DOSH W.P. Kuala Lumpur from 2005 – 2008, Director of Coordination and Planning Division DOSH HQ from 2001 – 2004 and Director of Major Hazard Division DOSH HQ from 1997 to 2001.

Prof. Dr. Shamsul Bahri is currently the Director Center for Industry Linkages & Networks Office of Vice Chancellor (Community & Industry Linkage) UPM and was the former Deputy Dean (Post Graduate, Industrial and Community Linkages and Income Generation) from the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, consultant in field of Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene and Ergonomics fields at the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health, UPM and also adjunct Professor in Universiti Tenaga Nasional. He is also a member of High Council of occupational Safety and Health of Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd. At the National and International level, he is the current President of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Malaysia (HFEM), executive council member of South East Asian Network of Ergonomics Societies (SEANES), executive council members of Asian Council of Ergonomics Design-ACED, executive council member of international ergonomics association (IEA) At the national level, he is the secretary of the National Association of Occupational Safety and Health under the Malaysian Federation of Occupational Safety and Health (MYFOSH), a member of the national Industrial Hygiene Catalyst committee involving a combination of associations and companies including HFEM, Malaysian Industrial Hygiene Association (MIHA), Samsung Electronics (Malaysia), SOSCO, CICM and others. He is also involved in the assessment of occupational safety and health programs curriculum at Universities and colleges in Malaysia and internationally, including Um Al Qura University, Makkah, Saudi Arabia. In addition, he is also an assessor for grants for Ministry of Higher Education, Private University (UTP) and also the consultant for private companies and the Ministry of Human Resources under the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH). He is also a Member of the National Committee on Policy Preparation in terms of Ergonomic Guidelines, technical committee for the National Guideline for Manual Handling at the workplace 2018.Currently he is involved as national committee in reviewing the existing National Guidelines for Standing at Work, Seating at Work and also working with VDU. He is also involved with the provision of Certified Professional Ergonomist (CPE) at National and Asian level. He actively conducts the research and consultancy in occupational safety and health especially in the field of Ergonomics and industrial hygiene. He has received a total of RM 4.35 million in funds in terms of research and consultancy in relation to his expertise. A total of 103 consultation projects had been run by industry networks involving the Government Consultation Project, particularly in consultation with the Ministry of Human Resources with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and SOCSO as well as other ministries such as the Department of Survey and Mapping Malaysia and MOSTI since 2006. He is giving the consultation of private companies including Frost & Sullivan, Sime Darby Plantation, TNB, TM Malaysia, Samsung Electronics (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, Federation of Malaysian Manufacturing (FMM), Murphy Oil, Petrofac, Petronas, Petronas MNLG, Sabah Port, Malaysian Airline Berhad (MAHB), Infineon (Kulim), ASTRO and many more. In International level, his consultation works also involved with Al-Esnad and the Saudi Ministry of Labor (MOL) companies in terms of job safety and health negotiations and the preparation of the National Occupational Safety and Health Policy. To date he is still working with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health that in agreement with Department’s Policy Division in order to implement policies related to the improvement of occupational safety and health in developing countries. The outcomes of the research and consultations that conducted under the Consultation Project (OSH Profile of 2007 and OSH Profile 2016) have produced an important impact on the implementation of the government policy on Occupational Safety and Health under OSHMP 15 (2010 to 2015). Its involving with the industry’s key issues and gap analyzes to summarize the policy for the preparation of the OSHMP 20 Main Action Plan (2015 to 2020). In directly, the government is ensuring that Malaysia complies with the requirements of the International Labor Union (ILO) under the convection of 155 and 187. The result of his consultation on safety and health issues has opened up space where Malaysia has been an example to other developing countries such as Saudi Arabia in being follow of Safety and Health Model at the National level.
In publications, he is guest editor for Malaysian Journal of Medicine & Health Sciences, reviewer for Industrial Health, Journal of Occupational Health (JOH), Human factors and Ergonomics in Manufacturing & Services Journal, Applied Ergonomics, Asia Pacific Journal of Public health, Human factors and Ergonomics Journal to name a few. He is also reviewer for conference articles including Human Factors and Ergonomics Conference (HFE), ACED Conference and SEANES Conference. He has published several policy report together with DOSH and Lead Editor for Industrial Achievement Book by DOSH to be circulated to industries in Malaysia.
Currently he had published a total of 131 Indexed Journals, 36 supplementary indexed journal and 13 non citation indexed Journal. He had graduated a total of 7 PhD candidates and 15 masters graduate as the main supervisor while 6 masters as co-supervisor.
