KUALA LUMPUR – What began in 2010 as a specialized niche for a handful of visionaries has transformed into a cornerstone of Malaysia’s national occupational safety strategy. As of 2026, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society Malaysia (HFEM) stands as the definitive authority on the intersection of human capability and workplace design.
2010–2014: The Foundation of a Movement
The decade opened with the formal registration of HFEM on June 5, 2010. Recognizing that Malaysia’s rapid industrialization required a “human-centered” approach, the society immediately sought international legitimacy. By 2012, they successfully hosted the SEANES Conference in Langkawi, signaling to the global community that Southeast Asia was ready to lead in ergonomics. A pivotal 2013 MoU with NIOSH Malaysia cemented the society’s role as the government’s primary technical advisor.
2015–2019: Translating Science into Law
This era marked the shift from academic discussion to legislative action. In 2015, the society’s global standing peaked when founder Dr. Halimahtun Mohd Khalid received the prestigious IEA Triennial President’s Award.
The most significant milestone for Malaysian workers arrived in 2017, with the launch of the Guidelines on Ergonomics Risk Assessment (ERA). Developed in tandem with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), this document became the legal benchmark for identifying and mitigating physical strain in the workplace. By 2019, HFEM was officially inducted as a Federated Member of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA).
2020–2023: Navigating the Digital Shift
As the pandemic redefined “the workplace,” HFEM pivoted to address remote work and IR4.0. The 2021 launch of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Journal (HFEJ) provided a localized platform for research into Asian anthropometry and cognitive load. This period culminated in the HFEMC 2023 conference, which addressed the “New Normal” by integrating sustainability and inclusivity into ergonomic standards.
2024–2026: The Era of Professionalization and AI
The last two years have seen the professionalization of the industry. In 2024, the society officially launched the Malaysian Certified Professional Ergonomist (MCPE) board. This move ensured that “Ergonomist” is now a protected title, requiring rigorous certification (CPE/APE) to practice.
By the start of 2026, the society successfully integrated AI-driven Ergonomics Improvement Programs with SOCSO (PERKESO), providing Malaysian companies with financial incentives to adopt smart, ergonomic workstation technologies. Today, with over 500 active professionals, HFEM continues to lead the charge in ensuring that as Malaysia’s technology advances, its people remain protected.
Congratulations on 16 years of service and impact.
HFEM journey reflects passion, resilience, and a deep commitment to improving lives. May this milestone be a reminder of how far we have come and a motivation for even greater achievements in the future.
